Bronkhortspruit Primary and Cultura High School in Bronkhortspruit, South Africa
The Foundation
Pauline started financially helping one child in Bronkhorstspruit Primary School and one in Cultura High School. Both schools are located in a small town where Pauline and her siblings grew up in, called Bronkhorstspruit in the Province of Gauteng in South Africa. From her own pocket, she sponsored the children by paying their school fees for the year, giving them a school uniform voucher and a trophy. Providing the remaining parent or guardian brief financial relief and giving the children a reason to keep working hard while reassuring them that their dreams are valid. Pauline shared her story with her then mentor who not only helped her in financially supporting a child but he was also the catalyst in her sharing her story with a wider audience. As a result, “The Journey Continues” Foundation was established in the year 2024.
The foundation aims to help children in South Africa who lost a parent or both by assisting with education related costs including school fees, school uniform, stationery etc. and assist the children where mental health is concerned. For the surviving parent or guardian, the financial assistance gives them an opportunity to focus on other responsibilities. For the children, the assistance not only aims to motivates them to keep on working hard and pursuing their dreams but it also offers mental health support to process grief and helps children learn valuable mindfulness techniques.
Meet the Founder
Pauline Rachuene (Nee Mohlala), is an author and the first born of Mrs E.N Mohlala and the late Mr N.J. Mohlala. Born and raised in South Africa. Pauline was a few weeks away from her 13th birthday when her dad passed away, succumbing to his injuries after being involved in a car accident. The loss hit hard to this young family.
Pauline watched how her mother struggled to raise her and her young siblings. Finances were tough and life changed. Pauline’s mom prioritized their education but on her salary it was tough to put Pauline through university and her younger siblings through school too.
Pauline witnessed how other children who lost a parent had to switch schools and even drop out of university because the remaining parent and/ or guardian could no longer afford; which is additional trauma. Pauline promised herself that she will help as many children she can in order to reduce the number of children that end up going through that trauma.
As an author, Pauline has written “A Kingless Princess”. A book mainly aimed at helping grieving children as they process their own loss. A book, which helps the bereaved child know that resilience, is key and it okay not be okay.
